A solar eclipse is such a magnificent view to behold. In fact, it is so appealing that painters including Cosmias Damian Asam devoted some time to rendering the effect to canvas and oil. Asam in particular was captivated by Baily’s beads or what is better known as the “diamond ring effect.”

Why the Name?

The diamond ring effect took its name from the appearance of the eclipse when the mountainous terrain of the moon causes “beads” to appear where the sun’s light has filtered through the moon’s occultation. These beads disappear one by one until only one point is left. This point takes on a larger appearance than the earlier beads and is considered the gem of the diamond ring, and the entire part of the sun blotted out by the moon is reminiscent of the ring’s band.

The “diamond ring effect” was first explained in correct detail by astronomer Francis Baily. Baily was able to find out the answer to such a phenomenon and presented his observations to the scientific community in 1836. Since then, the phenomenon has been named in his honor.
